Llama
Lore
Llamas, highly social and intelligent members of the camel (camelid) family,
weigh between 280 and 450 pounds, and stand from 40-45" at the shoulder and
5'5"-6' at the head. They live from 15-20 years. A single baby (cria) is normally
delivered unassisted from a standing mother during the day. Llamas come in a
variety of colorations (solid, spotted, or otherwise marked) including white,
grays, black, brown, beige, roan, and many shades in between.
Llamas have many uses. They are excellent pack animals, and they provide a
source of luxurious, grease-free, lightweight natural-colored wool, popular
with spinners and weavers. They also make excellent pets, even for children.
Camelids originated on the central plains of North America about 40 million
years ago. Over the years they continued to evolve and migrated to other continents.
Llamas are now native to the Andes Mountains in South America, and are gaining
popularity in the United States and Canada. Come visit us — and discover the
